#7247 • Neoclassical Trompe-l’Oeil Painted Storage Trunk / Side Chest with Faux Marble Top, 22"
Part of Historic Manor Downsizing Auction (timed auction by Prime Auction Solutions)
Status: Sold
A decorative neoclassical-style storage trunk or occasional side chest, finished in trompe-l’oeil polychrome to simulate swagged drapery and gilt ornament, likely late 20th century. The case presents as a rectangular, lift-top form with a faux marbleized top framed by a molded edge, above a classical frieze of anthemion-like motifs in warm “gilt” tones. The front is dominated by an illusionistic theatrical drape—green valance and deep red curtain—accented with tassel trim and rosette roundels, creating a stage-like focal panel. The hinged lid opens to a plain black-painted interior cavity intended for discreet storage. The base is finished with a bowed lower apron and raised on spherical bun feet, reinforcing the period-revival character and giving the piece visual lift. As a functional decorative object, it reads equally well as a small blanket chest, hall trunk, or accent table with concealed storage, designed to deliver high-impact classical décor without the weight or expense of carved and gilded woodwork. A paper label to the underside/inside references “SALON SWAG TRUNK,” with printed list and sale pricing, suggesting original retail identification from a home-decor line. Size: 17" x 17" x 22"
