Hand-knotted area rug in 100% wool. Farahan medallion design on a deep black field. Rust-red floral border. Cream cotton fringe. The Farahan design takes its name from the historic Farahan plain in central Persia's Arak district, where 19th-century workshops produced some of the most coveted rugs in the history of the craft. Farahan weavings are prized by collectors for their bold medallion-and-corner compositions, rich color contrasts, and meticulous detail — and this piece is a faithful expression of that tradition. The composition is dramatic and immediately arresting: a grand stepped central medallion in luminous salmon, rose, and gold with a bold red geometric core, set against a deep black field. The dark ground acts almost like a jeweler's velvet, allowing the warm-toned motifs to glow with remarkable intensity. Scrolling vines, palmettes, and floral sprays in gold, teal, olive, and cream fill the field with layered detail that rewards close inspection. The wide rust-red border, densely packed with large rosettes and curvilinear leaves, provides a rich frame — the contrast between the dark field and warm border gives this rug a commanding visual weight. The wool pile is substantial and plush, with the density that comes from a high knot count and quality yarn. At this size, an experienced weaver would require roughly 10 to 14 months to complete the piece. The folded-back corner reveals tight, consistent knotting, confirming the integrity of the weave. An ideal size to anchor a living room, family room, or formal dining room. Measures 8'0" x 9'2".
