An exceptional handcrafted luxury chess set by the celebrated Italian master sculptor Piero Benzoni (b. 1938, Melegnano, Italy). This magnificent "Medioevo" (Medieval) themed set features 32 intricately detailed bronze chess pieces finished in 24-karat gold plate and silver plate, depicting medieval knights, royalty, and castle towers in full period regalia. The pieces display extraordinary craftsmanship using the traditional lost-wax casting technique, with each figure exhibiting fine details including heraldic lion crests on shields, plumed helmets, armored horses with caparisons, and ornate royal robes. The sculptural quality showcases knights on rearing steeds with lances, foot soldiers with swords and shields, and castle towers with architectural detailing. The chessboard features alternating squares of green Mexican onyx and white marble, set within a silver-plated bronze frame embellished with decorative lion medallions and architectural motifs. Golden recumbent lions serve as corner feet, adding to the regal presentation. Signed: "Piero Benzoni" (visible on multiple pieces - artist's characteristic signature) Dimensions: Board: 22 x 22 x 3 inches; Figurines: 5-7 inches tall (largest) with smaller pawns Origin: Italy, late 20th century
