Status: Sold

Measuring an impressive 12'9" by 19'11" and crafted entirely of hand‑knotted wool atop a sturdy cotton foundation, this opulent carpet is a modern homage to the legendary Savonnerie carpets of France—a tradition born in the early 17th century under royal patronage. Its roots trace back to around 1627, when Louis XIII granted Pierre DuPont and his apprentice Simon Lourdet a monopoly to produce knotted‑pile carpets “in the manner of Turkey” in Paris, repurposing an old soap factory—Savonnerie in French—for weaving workshops . Flourishing under Louis XIV’s reign, the Savonnerie manufactory was placed under the artistic direction of Charles Le Brun. Between circa 1665 and 1685, they executed some of their most ambitious commissions for the Galerie d’Apollon and the Grande Galerie of the Louvre—lavish, architectural carpets resplendent with acanthus scrolls, medallions, and royal symbolism . Although the golden era of the original Savonnerie works ended by the late 18th century, their artistic vocabulary—architectural motifs, central medallions, floral garlands, and mythic imagery—continues to influence high-end reproductions. This carpet carries forward that legacy, evoking the clarity and elegance of those historic masterpieces without explicitly referencing its modern origin. The richly detailed design unfolds like a royal ceiling come to life beneath your feet: a grand central medallion set among intertwining floral swags, framed by elaborate borders and stylized mythological creatures. The composition’s balanced symmetry and soft yet vibrant hues recall the decorative splendor once reserved for palaces. This piece is more than a rug—it’s a woven oversize narrative that threads together centuries of European artistic tradition. Perfect for formal living rooms, grand halls, or statement interiors, it offers both tactile luxury and a direct link to the historic grandeur of Savonnerie weaving. This is one of the most beautiful rug we have brought to auction! 12'9" x 19'11" Consignor had the rug professionally cleaned in preparation for the sale; rolled and ready for placement.
